Casting Competition Winners
This year’s annual AFS Casting Competition is a rare one. Two submitted castings tied for the top honor, and for very different reasons. The opener main body casting by Lethbridge Iron Works Co. (Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada) showcases the opportunities in converting from fabrication to casting, while the V6 engine block by BRP-US (Spruce Pine, North Carolina) exemplifies the ultra-complexity achievable with the lost foam casting process. Eight additional castings also have been honored for their exemplary work in achieving customer benefits and advancing the metalcasting industry.

Emerson's Bold Moves
Plant manager John Schuster and AFS Corporate Member Emerson (South Milwaukee, Wisconsin) are always working to improve.
“We keep pushing to get better and better every day, and keep trying to get capital to keep investing in the facility,” Schuster said. “I definitely think the changes I’ve seen are for the better.”
What Schuster and Emerson are doing is working, and it earned them the 2019 Plant Engineering Award.
Manufacturing Day 2019
The American Foundry Society (AFS) highlighted careers in metalcasting to students, teachers, and families during its Manufacturing Day Open House on Oct. 4, 2019.
The event is part of a coordinated national annual celebration of the manufacturing industry to show the public its importance to the economy and address common misconceptions about manufacturing. Companies are encouraged to open their doors to their communities and show what they make, the technologies they use, and the promising career paths available.
